The money is split across three accounts: Ordinary (housing and education), Special (retirement) and MediSave (healthcare).

Several reliefs lower your chargeable income:
Earned Income Relief: S$1,000 under 55, S$6,000 for 55 to 59, S$8,000 at 60 and over
CPF Relief: your mandatory CPF contributions are deductible
NSman Relief: S$1,500 to S$3,000 for national servicemen
Parent or Grandparent Relief: S$5,500 to S$14,000 per dependant
By default this calculator applies Earned Income Relief only.

For higher earners, Singapore is one of the gentler major economies. On S$120,000 the effective income tax rate is roughly 8% to 9%, against about 28% in the UK on an equivalent ยฃ70,000. You do also set aside 20% in CPF, but that is saving rather than tax. Purely on cash take-home, Singapore comfortably beats most of Europe and lands close to the US before any state tax.
