Common New Zealand Take-Home Pay Questions
On $80,000 gross in New Zealand for 2025/26, take-home pay is about $60,436 a year, roughly $5,036 a month. That is after $17,920 of income tax and a $1,644 ACC earners' levy.
By OECD standards the load is fairly light: there is no social insurance beyond the ACC levy, and wages are not subject to GST.
The 2025/26 PAYE rates are:
10.5% up to $14,000
17.5% on $14,001-$48,000
30% on $48,001-$70,000
33% on $70,001-$180,000
39% above $180,000
The ACC earners' levy, run by the Accident Compensation Corporation, is charged at 2.055% on earnings up to $142,283 for 2025/26, so it tops out near $2,924 a year. It pays for ACC's no-fault scheme, which covers your medical costs and lost income after an injury whoever is at fault, and in return removes the right to sue for personal injury in most situations.
KiwiSaver is the country's voluntary retirement savings scheme. You choose a contribution of 3%, 4%, 6%, 8% or 10% of gross pay, and your employer chips in at least 3% on top. Once you are enrolled, your take-home drops by whatever rate you picked. It is optional, and you can opt out within eight weeks of starting a job. This calculator does not take KiwiSaver off your pay.
There is no formal tax-free band. What softens the load is the Independent Earner Tax Credit (IETC), worth up to $520 a year for people earning between $24,000 and $48,000. Lower and middle earners with children may also receive Working for Families tax credits.
