Common Netherlands Take-Home Pay Questions

On โ‚ฌ60,000 gross in the Netherlands for 2026, take-home pay is around โ‚ฌ38,400 a year, about โ‚ฌ3,200 a month. At this level the Box 1 charge, which rolls income tax and social premiums together, removes roughly โ‚ฌ21,600 in total.

For employment income the Netherlands runs a simple two-rate Box 1 structure.

The 2026 Box 1 rates on employment income are:
36.97% up to โ‚ฌ75,518, combining income tax with AOW, ANW and WLZ national insurance
49.5% above โ‚ฌ75,518

The lower rate looks high because it already bundles in about 27.65% of national insurance (AOW pension, ANW survivor cover and WLZ long-term care). Once you reach state pension age the AOW slice drops out, taking the lower band down to roughly 19.03%.

Two credits do most of the work in 2026:
Arbeidskorting (labour credit): worth up to โ‚ฌ5,532 for workers, tapering off above โ‚ฌ38,098
Algemene heffingskorting (general credit): up to โ‚ฌ3,068 for incomes under about โ‚ฌ24,813, falling to zero above roughly โ‚ฌ75,518

Together they pull the effective rate down a fair amount, most noticeably in the โ‚ฌ35,000 to โ‚ฌ70,000 range.

The 30% ruling (30%-regeling) lets eligible workers hired from abroad take up to 30% of their pay free of tax for five years, trimmed to 27% from year four under the 2024 changes. It is aimed at employees with specific skills recruited from outside the country.

This calculator uses the standard rates, so anyone on the 30% ruling will end up with noticeably more in hand.

Not as a separate payslip line for the main ones. National insurance premiums (volksverzekeringen) are baked into the Box 1 rate, so the 36.97% band already carries about 27.65% of social premiums, and you settle them through your income tax return. Employee contributions for WW (unemployment) and ZW (sickness) are handled separately through your employer.
