Common Japan Take-Home Pay Questions
On ¥7,000,000 gross in Japan for 2026, take-home pay is around ¥5,250,000 a year, about ¥437,400 a month. National income tax is roughly ¥310,000, inhabitant tax about ¥375,000, and social insurance across health, pension and employment near ¥1,065,000. The employment income deduction and those premiums shrink the taxable base considerably.
On taxable income after deductions, the 2026 national rates are:
5% up to ¥1,950,000
10% on ¥1,950,001-¥3,300,000
20% on ¥3,300,001-¥6,950,000
23% on ¥6,950,001-¥9,000,000
33% on ¥9,000,001-¥18,000,000
40% on ¥18,000,001-¥40,000,000
45% above ¥40,000,000
A further 2.1% reconstruction surtax (復興特別所得税) is added on top of the income tax itself.
Inhabitant tax (Jūminzei) is collected by your prefecture and municipality. It is a flat 10% of taxable income, split 4% prefectural and 6% municipal, plus a small per-head levy of ¥5,000 to ¥5,500 a year. Crucially it is billed the following year, based on the prior year's income. On ¥7,000,000 that is roughly ¥430,000 a year.
The employee side of social insurance in 2026 looks like this:
Kosei nenkin (employee pension): 9.15% up to a standard monthly remuneration of ¥650,000
Kenkō hoken (health): about 4.9%, varying by insurer
Koyō hoken (employment): 0.6%
Combined: around 14.65% of standard monthly remuneration
Before taxable income is worked out, Japan applies a fairly generous employment income deduction (Kyūyo shotoku kōjo) to gross pay:
Gross ¥1,625,000 or less: ¥550,000
Up to ¥1.8M: 40%, with a ¥550K floor
Up to ¥3.6M: 30% plus ¥180,000
Up to ¥6.6M: 20% plus ¥540,000
Up to ¥8.5M: 10% plus ¥1,200,000
Above ¥8.5M: a flat ¥1,950,000
It is a big reason Japan's effective rate sits well under the headline percentages.
