Common Italy Take-Home Pay Questions

On โ‚ฌ40,000 gross in Italy for 2026, take-home pay is around โ‚ฌ27,430 a year, about โ‚ฌ2,286 a month. IRPEF, counting the average regional and municipal add-ons and after the employee detrazione, works out at roughly โ‚ฌ8,890, with employee INPS contributions near โ‚ฌ3,680 (9.19%).

Italy's real tax load is among the heaviest in Southern Europe, though the detrazioni (tax credits) for employees pull the net bill down a good deal.

The 2026 IRPEF bands are short:
23% up to โ‚ฌ28,000
35% on โ‚ฌ28,001-โ‚ฌ50,000
43% above โ‚ฌ50,000

Then come the local add-ons: a regional surcharge (addizionale regionale) of roughly 1.23% to 3.33%, plus a municipal one (addizionale comunale) of 0% to 0.9% depending on where you live.

The employee INPS share for 2026 is:
Pension (IVS): 9.19% on earnings up to about โ‚ฌ55,008 a year
Other cover: around 0.30%
Employee total: roughly 9.49% of the contribution base

The employer pays a great deal more, near 23.81%, which is why the full cost of employing someone runs well above their gross salary.

Employees get a work-income tax credit (detrazione per redditi da lavoro dipendente) worth up to โ‚ฌ1,955 a year for incomes up to โ‚ฌ15,000, then tapering away by โ‚ฌ55,000. It takes a meaningful bite out of the IRPEF owed by middle earners, and the calculator applies it for you.

There is a much-discussed inbound-worker regime (Impatriati) for people moving to Italy or coming home after time abroad: up to 50% of income escapes IRPEF for five years, and up to ten in certain cases. It makes Italy appealing for returning expats and remote workers arriving from overseas. This calculator sticks to the standard IRPEF rates.
