Common Ireland Take-Home Pay Questions
On โฌ55,000 gross in Ireland for 2026, take-home pay is around โฌ38,800 a year, about โฌ3,233 a month. The deductions come to roughly โฌ11,700 of income tax (PAYE), โฌ2,600 of USC and โฌ2,255 of PRSI.
Taken together, that is an effective rate of about 29.4% at this income once all three are counted.
Irish PAYE for 2026 has just two rates:
20% up to โฌ44,000, the standard rate band for a single person
40% on anything above โฌ44,000
Tax credits then cut what you owe. The Personal Tax Credit (โฌ1,875) and Employee Tax Credit (โฌ1,875) come to โฌ3,750, which in practice leaves the first โฌ18,750 or so free of income tax.
The 2026 USC bands are:
0.5% up to โฌ12,012
2% on โฌ12,013-โฌ25,760
4% on โฌ25,761-โฌ70,044
8% above โฌ70,044
If you earn less than โฌ13,000 in the year, USC does not apply at all.
PRSI, or Pay Related Social Insurance, is Ireland's social insurance charge. As an employee you pay Class A PRSI at 4.1% on everything above โฌ352 a week (โฌ18,304 a year). It goes towards the State Pension, jobseeker's benefit and illness benefit.
At similar salaries the overall burden is usually close to the UK's, but the mechanics differ. Ireland layers on USC, which the UK has no equivalent for, yet its wider standard band (โฌ44,000 against the UK's ยฃ50,270) keeps more of your pay in the 20% zone rather than the 40% one.
