Common Belgium Take-Home Pay Questions
Belgium sits near the top of the OECD for tax on earnings. On €55,000 gross in 2026, take-home pay is around €34,600 a year, about €2,883 a month. The employee ONSS social security charge is roughly €7,190 (13.07%), and income tax, once the professional expense allowance and tax-free sum are applied and the average 7% municipal surcharge is added, comes to about €13,210.
The 2026 federal brackets are:
25% up to €15,820
40% on €15,821-€27,920
45% on €27,921-€48,320
50% above €48,320
On top of that sits a municipal surcharge (centimes additionnels) averaging about 7% of the federal tax. Notably, that 50% top rate arrives at a fairly low €48,320 by European standards.
For employees, ONSS (Office National de Sécurité Sociale) is a flat 13.07% on all gross pay, with no ceiling for most workers.
That is €7,189 a year on a €55,000 salary, and it pays for health cover, pensions, unemployment, workplace accident insurance and family allowances.
Several things come off before income tax is worked out:
Professional expenses (forfait): a flat 30% of net professional income, capped near €5,200 for 2026
ONSS: your social contributions are deducted before the tax calculation
Employment bonus: a social reduction that lowers ONSS for people on modest incomes
Belgium is reliably among the two or three highest-taxed OECD countries when it comes to labour. It stacks up: a 50% top rate reached at just €48,320, flat 13.07% social contributions with no upper limit, municipal surcharges of roughly 7%, and modest tax-free allowances. That said, generous fringe benefits, such as company cars, meal vouchers and eco-vouchers, soften the real burden for a lot of employees.
