On โ‚ฌ55,000 gross in Austria for 2026, take-home pay is around โ‚ฌ35,100 a year, about โ‚ฌ2,926 a month. Income tax (Lohnsteuer) accounts for roughly โ‚ฌ9,900, and the employee social insurance share for close to โ‚ฌ9,970, which is taken off first, before the tax bands are worked out.

The 2026 income tax scale (Einkommensteuertarif) runs:
0% up to โ‚ฌ12,816
20% on โ‚ฌ12,817-โ‚ฌ20,818

48% on โ‚ฌ66,613-โ‚ฌ99,266
50% on โ‚ฌ99,267-โ‚ฌ1,000,000
55% above โ‚ฌ1,000,000

On gross earnings, the 2026 employee contributions are:
Pension (PV): 10.25%
Health (KV): 3.87%
Unemployment (AV): 3.0%
Accident cover: paid entirely by the employer
Employee total: about 18.12%, up to the ASVG ceiling of โ‚ฌ6,450 a month

The Verkehrsabsetzbetrag is a commuter tax credit worth โ‚ฌ487 a year. Depending on how far you travel to work, lower earners may also pick up an extra Pendlereuro. Both are handled automatically through the Lohnsteuer calculation.

Most Austrian employees get two extra monthly payments across the year: holiday pay (Urlaubsgeld) and a Christmas bonus (Weihnachtsgeld), the well-known 13th and 14th salaries. These are taxed at a favourable flat 6% up to โ‚ฌ2,100, with normal rates only beyond that. It is a real advantage, and it is why Austria's true tax load comes in below what the headline rates might suggest.
